Makotekan Tradition at Munggu

Many sacred and unique ceremonies and activities are held to celebrate Kuningan holyday, one of them is Makotekan activity. This unique activity can only be found in Munggu village, Mengwi, Badung. Makotekan is performed in order to purify the village and serves as symbol of never ending battle between virtue and evil.

Makotekan is usually held in the afternoon and last until night. Makotekan begins with a procession of temple treasure, deities’ effigies, temple’s flags and holy weapons from all temples in the village to Pura Desa (Village Temple). This procession involves hundreds of villagers and accompanied by the Gamelan Baleganjur. Half of the male members of the procession, especially the youth carry Kotekan (Long wood staves decorated with leaves and tamiang –a shield like ornament made of young coconut leaves). Arriving at the village temple, the members of procession pray together, ask for blessing for the success of Makotekan activity.

After the praying session is over the procession of temple treasure, deities’ effigies, temple’s flags and holy weapons depart for Ngider Bhuana (encircling universe/ village in this context) journey.

The male members of procession who carry the Kotekan begin to perform the Makotekan activity in the front part the procession. They thrash each other in semi trance at first but since this activity involves hundreds of men the thrashing session soon over replaces by making a mountain like pile of staves, each side of the pile push the pile as hard as they can and eventually the pile will collapse and fall on the weaker side. This activity is repeated over an over along the way. After the Ngider Bhuana journey is completed the procession of temple treasure, deities’ effigies, temple’s flags and holy weapons back to their respective temple, and the Makotekan activity is over.

Though Makotekan is a dangerous activity but there is no injury inflicted to the performers or members of the procession. They believe that the deities will protect them and there is nothing to be afraid since they perform the Mekotekan activity for the welfare of the village.

Pesinggahan

Pesinggahan is the name of a small village near the border districts of Klungkung and Karangasem Bali. Exact place about 150 m before the famous tourist attraction of Goa Lawah (bat cave temple).

From the direction of Denpasar towards Amlapura, before entering Goa Lawah area, you will see a T-junction. Take the small road to the left, towards the end of the lane you will find restaurants and satay fish Pepes (steam fish) Pesinggahan.

Tirtagangga built in 1948 by King of Karangasem, Anak Agung Ketut Karangasem Anglurah. This water park is constructed in a very unique architectural style of Bali and China. Tirtagangga located in the Ababi Village, Abang District, about 83 km from Denpasar and 6 km from Amlapura to the north.

Barong Dance

Barong is probably the most well known dance. It is also another story telling dance, narrating the fight between good and evil. This dance is the classic example of Balinese way of acting out mythology, resulting in myth and history being blended into one reality.

The story goes that Rangda, the mother of Erlangga, the King of Bali in the tenth century, was condemned by Erlangga's father because she practiced black magic. After she became a widow, she summoned all the evil spirits in the jungle, the leaks and the demons, to come after Erlangga. A fight occurred, but she and her black magic troops were too strong that Erlangga had to ask for the help of Barong. Barong came with Erlangga's soldiers, and fight ensued. Rangda casted a spell that made Erlangga soldiers all wanted to kill themselves, pointing their poisoned keris into their own stomachs and chests. Barong casted a spell that turned their body resistant to the sharp keris. At the end, Barong won, and Rangda ran away.

Somebody can die or get seriously injured in a Barong dance. It is said that if Rangda's spell is too strong, a weak soldier may not be able to resist it, even with the help of Barong. He may end up hurting himself with his own keris.

The masks of Barong and Rangda are considered sacred items, and before they are brought out, a priest must be present to offer blessings by sprinkling them with holy water taken from Mount Agung, and offerrings must be presented.

Rangda Bali

According to traditional Balinese mythology, Rangda is the demon queen of the leyaks in Bali. Terrifying to behold, the child-eating Rangda leads an army of evil witches against the leader of the forces of good - Barong.

It is suggested that Rangda may be derived from the 11th century Javan queen Mahendradatta who was exiled by the king, Dharmodayana, for allegedly practising witchcraft. The tale surrounding this is that she proceeded to take her revenge by killing off half the kingdom, which by then belonged to her and Dharmodayana's son Erlangga, with plague before being overcome by a holy man. The name Rangda means "widow".

Rangda is important in Balinese culture, and performances depicting her struggles with Barong or with Airlangga in that tale are popular tourist attractions as well as tradition. She is depicted as a mostly nude old woman, with long and unkempt hair, pendulous breasts, and claws. Her face is traditionally a horrifying fanged and goggle-eyed mask, with a long, protruding tongue.

Bali is a Hindu island, and it is suggested that Rangda may also be closely associated with Durga. She has also been identified with the Hindu mother warrior goddess, and Kali, the black mother goddess of destruction, transformation and protection in Hinduism. While Rangda is seen as fearsome and by many as the personification of evil, she is also nevertheless considered a protective force in certain parts of Bali, much like Kali is seen as a benevolent mother goddess in the Indian states of West Bengal, Assam and Kerala. The colors associated with her - white, black and red - are identical with those associated with Kali. Her iconography is similar to that of both Kali and Chamunda, who are closely related.

Dozens of angry Ubud ( Bali, Indonesia) villagers demanded thousands of dollars from a crew filming Julia Roberts' new movie, "Eat, Pray, Love", officials said Friday.

Embarrassed officials said that when the crew arrived in Bali island's Bentuyung village a month ahead of schedule, locals blocked roads and demanded 32,000 dollars.

There was a misunderstanding. The crew came in 20 trucks, earlier than their scheduled shooting on November 10, so the villagers were offended and blocked the roads, because at that day there is Galungan ceremony and the trucks disturb Ubud villager.

Many news wrote that they asked for 300 million rupiah (32,100 dollars) to use the location for filming.The problem had been resolved and the crew allowed through, but added he would like to make it up to Roberts by inviting her to lunch at his house.
